Downloaded videos stay on your device until you delete them, and by default they show up in places other people might look. Here's how to keep them to yourself.
On an iPhone or iPad
- Videos downloaded in Safari go to the Files app, not to Photos. Files has no lock of its own, so if you don't want a video in Recents, move it to a folder and remove it from Recents (touch and hold → Remove from Recents).
- To keep a video in Photos but out of sight, open it, tap … and choose Hide. The Hidden album is locked with Face ID or Touch ID (iOS 16 and later).
- In Settings → Safari, you can clear your downloads list and history.
On Android
- Files by Google → Safe folder locks files behind a PIN or pattern and hides them from other apps.
- Samsung phones have Secure Folder, a separate locked space for files and apps.
- On any phone, a folder containing an empty file named .nomedia is skipped by gallery apps.
- In Chrome, ⋮ → Downloads lists your downloads; delete an entry there to remove the file as well.
On a computer
- Move videos out of Downloads into a folder of your own.
- For real protection, use your system's disk encryption (BitLocker on Windows, FileVault on Mac) or an encrypted archive with a password.
- Clear your browser's download list: open Downloads from its menu (Ctrl+J in Chrome and Edge on Windows) and remove the entries.
What a private window does
A private or incognito window doesn't keep the sites you visit in your history. It does not hide the files you download: they're saved to your device like any other download.
